  1. First of all, I would REALLY like to thank you for including these handbooks in the website. These were a lifesaver, and made a HUGE improvement on my test scores on the TJHSST Sample Test on the TJ website.

About 2 weeks ago, I took the TJHSST sample test on their website. To my horror, I had run out of time and had 20 questions left on the Mathematics portion. I quickly skimmed through the questions and answered all of them before time ran out, without paying attention to the questions.

I got an 84%. I got one Logical Reasoning problem wrong, one Reading Comprehension question wrong, and 14 Math questions wrong.

I was horrified, and determined to get a better score at any cost. I took many, many handbook tests on this website, timing myself strictly to an hour per Verbal, and an hour per Mathematics. I scoured the internet looking for another TJ sample test, and managed to find a copy of the 2012 TJHSST Admissions test.

I set a timer in front of my face, making sure to look at the clock as often as possible. I printed out the actual bubble sheet, rather than writing the letters on a sheet of lined paper like I did the first time around. I started the test trying to go as fast as I possibly could to rack up as much extra time as I could for the math part. I finally finished the test, and to my surprise, I had TWENT MINUTES left! I went back to the questions I had put little stars next to on the bubble sheet, and double-checked my answers. I turned off my timer and scrolled to the answers section.

I got a 94%. A TEN PERCENT increase! I got 2 Reading Comprehension questions wrong, so I still got two Verbal questions wrong, but to my surprise, I only missed 4 mathematics questions! I am extremely satisfied with the handbooks you’ve provided on the website, because they’ve boosted my scores MASSIVELY!

My only question for you now is, will a 94% suffice? I’m kind of scared of not becoming a semifinalist, because I had a B+ in Math and Language Arts on my report card last year, and I feel like getting al A’s is crucial! I don’t know whether or not this info is helpful, but I won the Prince William County Science Fair for Physics, in addition to receiving the Naval Research award, all added to making it to the state robotics championship. Still, they won’t be able to get all this info until the SIS’s, and that’s AFTER the Admissions test. I need to become a semifinalist for them to get that info! What are my chances? Please, help!

    1. Hi avikrao,

That is great to hear and thank you for the kind words. Feedback like yours makes this effort worthwhile! I think your chances for the semi-finals are excellent.
While I cannot comment on the impact of a B+ or any specific decision of the school, I would continue your efforts and focus on what you can control. And remember the semi-finalists include a broader universe than the ultimate admissions. For example, if 1 in 5 are ultimately accepted, then perhaps 2 in 5 will be semi-finalists. Do you think a score in the mid 90s percentile will put you in the top 2 out of 5? I am just ball parking the numbers of course, but I think the answer is more than likely yes.
