What Is Inside SHSAT Academy

More features and more questions than ever before. Here is what your student gets from day one.

Adaptive Diagnostic

Like the new adaptive SHSAT, our diagnostic adjusts to every student in real time. Questions get harder when you succeed and redirect when you need support. After 3 stages you receive a chapter-by-chapter performance report showing exactly where to focus your daily practice.

Nearly 3,000 Challenging SHSAT-Level Problems

Our math question bank is built to match the difficulty and multi-skill nature of real SHSAT problems. Combined ratios, invented unit conversions, cyclic remainder patterns, two-stage age problems, rate-with-variable expressions — the kinds of problems that trip up even prepared students. Not textbook drills. Real test prep.

Daily Practice, Not Cramming

Short daily exercises across each of the 10 lesson chapters build habits that compound over time. Twenty minutes a day consistently outperforms marathon weekend sessions. SHSAT Academy is built to support steady improvement, not last-minute cramming.

AI Math Tutor — Available 24/7

Stuck on a problem at 10pm? Our AI Math Tutor does not just mark answers right or wrong — it walks students through their reasoning step by step using the Socratic method. It asks the right questions, surfaces the gap in thinking, and lets the student arrive at the answer themselves. That is how real understanding is built. Unlike a human tutor, it is available every night, on every problem, at no extra cost.

Weekly Parent Progress Reports

Every week, parents receive a chapter-by-chapter score breakdown, progress trends, and specific areas to focus on. No more wondering whether your student is actually improving. You will see it clearly in writing, every single week.

Timed Practice Exams

Full-length practice exams in timed mode train students to manage the SHSAT clock, one of the most underestimated skills on test day. Every result is saved for review and tracked over time so both students and parents can see real improvement.

The SHSAT Just Changed

Ready for the New Computer-Adaptive SHSAT?

Starting Fall 2026, the SHSAT changes how questions are chosen for every student in real time — the difficulty of each question adjusts based on how you’re doing, question by question, just like the real exam now works. Most practice materials still don’t.

True Item-Level Adaptivity

Our benchmark exams adjust difficulty after every single question — not just once or twice at fixed checkpoints — so the practice experience actually mirrors how the real 2026 SHSAT measures your student’s ability.

📚

2,600+ Real SHSAT-Level Questions

Every question — and every companion practice version — is independently verified and organized across 23 precise skill categories, so your student never runs out of fresh material on the exact skills that show up on test day.

🎯

A Real Estimated Score

Not just a percentage — a scaled score estimate that tells you where your student stands relative to recent specialized high school cutoffs, so you know exactly where you’re aiming.

Enroll for Full Benchmark Access

Full-length adaptive benchmark exams are available to enrolled students, so you can track real progress toward test day.

What Is the SHSAT?

Who Can Apply?
Current 8th graders (for most grades) or 9th graders (for Grade 10 entry) attending NYC public, private, parochial, or charter schools. Students may only sit for the exam once per year.
When Does It Happen?
Registration opens in September. The exam is administered October through December. Scores and school offers are released in March. Students rank their top school choices when registering.
The Math Section
50 questions, computer-adaptive — difficulty adjusts in real time based on how the student is answering. No calculators. No formula sheet. Question types include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and technology-enhanced items (drag-and-drop, graphing, and similar). Topics span ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, algebraic equations and inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry — multi-skill word problems significantly harder than standard school curriculum.
The ELA Section
50 questions, also computer-adaptive, covering reading comprehension passages, revising-and-editing, and stand-alone grammar questions. Like Math, this section now mixes multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and technology-enhanced items. Strong readers still need practice with the specific format — it is different from what schools test, and once a question (or a completed passage set) is submitted, there’s no going back.
2026 Adaptive Format
Beginning Fall 2026, the SHSAT is fully computer-adaptive: the difficulty of each question adjusts in real time based on how the student is performing, question by question. Our free diagnostic already uses this same adaptive principle to give your student an early, accurate read on where they stand. Enrolled students go further with full-length, 50-question adaptive benchmark exams that mirror the real test’s format exactly.
How Scoring Works
Scores range from 200 to 800. The SHSAT score is the only admissions factor — no interviews, no essays, no teacher recommendations. Cut-off scores vary by school and year. Stuyvesant typically requires 550 or higher.
The 9 NYC Specialized High Schools: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Staten Island Tech, HSMSE, HSAS Lehman, Brooklyn Latin, Queens Science, and the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College.

Why Families Choose TestPrepSHSAT

Adaptive from Day One
Our diagnostic and daily practice system adapts to each student in real time — just like the new SHSAT format starting Fall 2026. Students get harder questions when they succeed and targeted support when they need it.
AI Math Tutor, Always On
Our AI Math Tutor is available every night on every problem — no scheduling, no hourly rate. It uses the Socratic method to guide students through their own reasoning rather than handing them answers. The kind of support that used to cost $100 an hour.
Parents Stay Informed
Weekly chapter-by-chapter progress reports go directly to parents. No surprises. No checking in manually. You see exactly what your student worked on and how they performed, every week.
You Do Not Have to Break the Bank
A full year of SHSAT prep starts at $19.99 — less than one hour with a private tutor. Expert preparation should not require a second mortgage. We have made it accessible on purpose.
