Current 8th graders who are Bergen County residents by September 1 of the application year. Public, private, parochial, charter, and homeschooled students are all eligible. Only one BCA application is permitted — duplicates are deleted.

Applications open in early fall via studentadmissions.bergen.org. The exam is in November. Phase 1 results in late February. Interviews in early spring. Final decisions in mid-April.

60 minutes — 40 multiple-choice questions. No calculators. Topics include algebra, number theory, sequences, ratios, statistics, geometry, and complex word problems. Significantly more advanced than standard school curriculum. Rewards arithmetic fluency and structured reasoning.

45 minutes — analytical essay. Students read a short passage and write a structured 5-paragraph analytical essay. Scored on comprehension, insight, organization, evidence, style, and grammar. Widely underestimated — half the exam.

Phase 1: Entrance exam + transcript + teacher recommendations + standardized scores. Phase 2: Individual interview with teachers and guidance counselors. Phase 3: Decision letters in mid-April via studentrecs.bergen.org.

Apply at studentadmissions.bergen.org. Required: 400-word application essay, recommendations from Math, English, and Science teachers, transcript, and standardized test scores. Declare first and second academy choices. A sample test is available at bca-admissions.bergen.org.
