Calibrate Your Essay Grading Against Official Samples:

  • Use the following official graded samples to better calibrate your grading to a known range of grades from 1-4.
  • For example, in order to advance from an analysis score of 2 (merely asserts rather than explains the importance of persuasive elements) to 3 (competently evaluates persuasive elements), it appears the writer must do more than present a point of evidence and a single assertion about the elements of argument. e.g., This causes the audience to reflect on his point and want to be able to expand their talents. The writer must also explain why the assertion is important. e.g., the writer argues not only that the story allows his audience to connect to him but also explains the importance of such connection (If his audience can relate or even understand his story they will be more willing to agree with him).
  • In order to achieve an analysis score of 4 (thorough, well-considered evaluation and insightful analysis), the writer must delve even further into explanation of the persuasive element and its importance to readers. e.g., In telling this brief anecdote, Bogard challenges the audience to remember a time where they could fully amass themselves in natural darkness void of artificial light. By drawing in his readers with a personal encounter…the author means to establish the potential for beauty, glamour, and awe-inspiring mystery that genuine darkness can possess…. This anecdote provides a baseline of sorts for readers to find credence with the author’s claims.
